Hollywood director and screenwriter signs upcoming novella and book series with The Liverpool Literary Agency
First title already set for major streaming service adaptation
Multi award-winning cinematographer, director, screenwriter and author, Steven Bernstein, has signed with The Liverpool Literary Agency for his comedy drama series of books, starting with novella Get Rich Quick (GRQ).
GRQ The Movie has already been adapted: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt18260078/ and is in conversation to be distributed by a major streaming service, and a worldwide theatrical release, starring starring Greg Germann (Ally McBeal, Ned & Stacey), Mena Suvari(American Beauty, American Pie) and Tom Walker (Jonathon Pie).
The novella considers crypto-currency through an ordinary family in an extraordinary position and a trader with his own complicated past.
Clare Coombes, Director and Co-Founder of The Liverpool Literary Agency commented:
“Steven has done so much to help underrepresentation within the film industry, in fact rebuilding it in Greece, which really matched our ethos and vision as an agency.
“His novella has a wonderful stream of consciousness and poetic style, with a tension and pace matching that of a trading office, simultaneously meeting a ‘locked room’ drama vibe.
“The book explores the nature of how things come to have value and is both comedic and philosophical in tone. It also looks at grief and guilt and the impact of tragedy on a family.
“US and UK audiences will emphasise on how the cost-of-living crisis, in particular for mortgages, can have devastating consequences. At the same time, they will see how wanting to ‘keep up appearances’ and live well beyond means can be dangerous. But as most of us have to live outside of our means even for basic bills, the empathy is still there.”
Steven lived half his life in the UK, but comes from Buffalo, a mainly working-class industrial city in New York State. He now lives in Los Angeles as he works in the film industry there.
“My films often still have a partial British cast, and many of the characters in my screenplays are adrift, lost, separated or alien. Longing for home, in the physical sense, but in the other sense too. And for decency. I enjoy the plain speaking and honesty of The Liverpool Literary Agency and their ethos to create opportunities and connections.
“There is also a logic then, when all of this is taken together, that Liverpool seemed a natural fit. I have also worked there in the past and really look forward to having a connection with the city again.”
